When a struggling student can instantly search for a fact, ask an AI to write an essay, obtain a math solution with a click, or replace a long book with a short video, the brain’s training shifts from effortful reasoning to rapid retrieval. This raises a stark question: what are we training young minds to do?</p><p>One of the most valuable forms of human capital in the coming decades may be surprisingly old‑fashioned – the ability to pay attention. The capacity to sit with a difficult text, read several pages without checking a notification, craft an argument from one’s own understanding, solve a problem without immediately consulting a machine, listen carefully to another person, tolerate boredom and think before responding are not obsolete because AI exists. They are becoming more valuable precisely because AI can supply information instantly; the scarce resource is human judgment.</p><p>Paper, often dismissed as technologically inferior, remains an extraordinarily effective learning medium. It carries no pop‑ups, ads, battery constraints or algorithms vying for attention. Research on reading comprehension shows that longer or more demanding texts are sometimes better understood on paper than on digital devices. This does not imply that all digital resources should be abandoned, but it does challenge the assumption that “digital = better.”</p><p>Handwriting faces a similar critique. While typing is efficient, writing by hand forces students to slow down, select information and process what they hear or read. Studies have linked handwriting with improved memory and learning outcomes. The argument is not that keyboards are bad – digital literacy is essential – but that learning to use technology differs from using technology for everything.</p><p>The economic dimension cannot be ignored. Education is a massive market: devices must be purchased, software subscriptions renewed, platforms licensed, digital content produced and data infrastructure maintained. AI tools are now part of this ecosystem. While it is legitimate for companies to profit from useful educational technology, schools and governments must confront whether commercial incentives are shaping pedagogical decisions. A technology firm naturally wants its products adopted; a school’s primary duty is to maximise children’s learning and development. The two goals can overlap but are not identical.</p><p>A cultural contradiction adds another layer. Some tech executives reportedly choose low‑tech environments for their own children, prompting the question: if those who understand technology best are sometimes cautious about exposing young learners to it, why does the broader system assume that more technology automatically means better education? The answer should not be an anti‑technology conspiracy, nor should parents accept every viral claim about Silicon Valley’s schooling choices. What is required is evidence.</p><p>If a school replaces printed textbooks with tablets, where is the proof that students learn better? If handwritten work becomes exclusively digital, what educational benefit is gained? If AI is mandated, what happens to independent reasoning? If every homework assignment is submitted through an app, does this improve learning or merely streamline administration? Most crucially, what happens to children’s attention when the same device used for learning also serves as a gateway to entertainment, social media, games and endless distraction?</p><p>Education should not aim to produce children who can simply operate the latest software – technology evolves faster than curricula can keep pace. Instead, the goal should be to nurture thinkers who possess knowledge, can distinguish evidence from misinformation, construct arguments, read deeply, communicate effectively, solve unfamiliar problems, collaborate with humans and exercise judgment when no algorithm offers guidance. Equally important is teaching when <em>not</em> to use AI.</p><p>This is not a war between the classroom of 1980 and that of 2030. The future classroom will blend technology where it adds genuine value – simulations that clarify concepts, digital labs that enable experiences otherwise impossible, adaptive tools that demonstrably help struggling students – with timeless human experiences: books, handwriting, conversation, play, experiments, art, physical activity, silence, deep reading and independent thinking. The guiding question shifts from “How much technology can we put into education?” to “What is the minimum technology necessary, and which human experiences must never be replaced?”</p><p>Parents play a pivotal role. They should not accept new devices or platforms merely because schools label them “innovation.” Critical questions include: What problem does this technology solve? What evidence supports its use? How much screen time does it add? What is being replaced? Could the same objective be achieved more effectively without a screen? How is student data protected? What safeguards exist against distraction? How is AI being employed? Most importantly, how is the school measuring whether children are actually learning better? These are pro‑education, not anti‑technology, inquiries.</p><p>In the AI age, the irony is that the more powerful our machines become, the more essential distinctly human capabilities become. AI can generate text, but can a child determine its truth? AI can solve a math problem, but can the child understand the underlying reasoning? AI can summarise a book, but can the child read it and form an original interpretation? AI can generate ten ideas, but can the child decide which is worth pursuing? The education we must build cultivates independent thinkers, not merely proficient users of technology. The future belongs to those who can wield technology without surrendering attention, judgment and imagination – where technology is a tool, not the classroom itself.</p>
