Adding a wave of power‑hungry, water‑intensive AI data centres could exacerbate these challenges dramatically.</p><p>The proposed Google–Adani data‑centre project near Visakhapatnam illustrates the dilemma. Proponents tout the project’s potential to generate jobs, attract ancillary services and cement India’s position in the AI supply chain. Yet, local activists and environmental experts have raised alarms about the centre’s water draw from already stressed river basins and its potential impact on coastal ecosystems.
